50 YEARS TUG OF WAR CLUB HEURE.

On June 2 nd 1955 seven friends, J.W.Markink, W. Klein Hazebroek, A. Langeler, H. Lichtenbarg. A.J. Visschers, J.W. Bröcker and H. Markink founded the Tug of War Club Heure. No one could imagine that 50 years later ttv. Heure still exists. Not to mention the fact that this club would be one of the founders of the Achterhoekse Touwtrek Bond (A.T.B.) in 1959 wich became the Dutch Tug of War Association, the N.T.B., in 1964.

Because of the always changing rules on pulling events eight clubs joined together to bring some structure in the Tug of War events and founded the A.B.T.B. in 1959. J.W. Markink, chairman of Heure, became chairman of the A.T.B. He stayed at that position up to 1976. Ttv. Heure was doing very well by winning three A.T.B. Championships. Famous is the tournement in 1963 when the pullers from ttv. Heure tried new shoes and won every match. Because of all the protests that same day, there was a special meeting and the shoes where not allowed anymore. Still ttv. Heure became Champion that year. In 1964 the Dutch wanted to join the Tug of War International Federation (TWIF) and because the A.T.B. was the only Tug of War Association in the Netherlands the name was changed in Nederlandse Touwtrek Bond, NTB (Dutch Tug of War Association). At that time the TWIF counted 3 members: England, Danmark and Sweden. The Dutch National team participated in Malmö, Sweden at the first European Championships, 3 members of that team came from ttv Heure. Surprisingly they won a Silver medal. In 1968 the third European Championships took place in Borculo, home of ttv. Heure, it was a great succes. 1996 the NTB changed to weight classes, the 640 and 720 kg. For ttv Heure 12 succesfull years followed, mainly in the 720 kg class. Old teams disappeared, new one came, ttv Heure stayed. The accent in pulling changed from the 720 kg to the 640 kg class. During these years ttv Heure won several times the Dutch Championships and in 1980 there was a Bronze medal for the 560 kg team at the Wotld Championships Open Club competition in Basel, Switzerland. A year later, in 1981 , ttv Heure formed the Dutch National team in the 720 kg class at the European Championships, Folkstone, England. They won the Bronze medal.

The years 1982 and following became hard for ttv Heure. Several members gave up the Tug of War sports and left the club. At 1985 ttv Heure almost didn't exist anymore. The few members they had tried very hard to get new members and they focussed on the youth. They had succes and ttv Heure was ready to go on. With their youth Heure became very succesfull. Three of them youngsters, W. van Rooyen, H. Weenk and R.Schepers where in the Dutch National Youth team at the Wotld Championships at Uppsala, Sweden, in 1994. They won the Silver medal. In 2002, one young boy, R. Boerstoel, was also a member of the National Youth team at the World Championships in Pretoria, South Africa. This team also participated in the Open Club Competition and won a Bronze medal. Already a few years now ttv Heure is again succesfull at the senior weight classes. Several times they won a medal at the Dutch Championships. In 2000 there was a Silver medal at the Open Club competition 720 kg class during the World Championships in Blackpool, England. 2003 they continued the good work by winning Gold at the Dutch Championships 680 kg class and a Silver medal for the 640 and 720 kg teams. At the European Championships in Assen, Netherlands they won a Bronze medal in the 720 kg.class Open Club competition. 2004 Silver medal at the Dutch Championships in these three weight classes. This same year the 640 kg team was sent to the World Champonships in the U.S.A. as National team. At the Open Club competition they also participated in the catch weight and won a Silver medal.

Ttv Heure is very proud to celebrate their 50 th anniversary in 2005, being the eldest Tug of War club in the Netherlands.
